Muse - Wembley Arena, London
(Monday November 27, 2006 9:51 PM )

Gig played on 22/11/06

Cecil B DeMille once said that when making films he always started with an earthquake and built to a climax. And this is a sentiment that bombastic rock three- piece Muse have definitely taken to heart. The diminutive Matt Bellamy looks swamped by the cavernous and antiseptic arena as he walks on stage in tight white jeans and schoolboy issue tank top. But as soon as his guitar screeches into life, he seems to fill the venue immediately. (He is, of course, aided by gigantic video screens that make him look like he's having his face sucked off by a nearby black hole. And talking of which…)

Muse are certainly nothing if not entirely predictable. They take the entirely sensible option of getting the new stuff out of the way first and play the first four songs off the album in order. So, the quasi-Philip Glass introduction of "Take A Bow" chimes out as Bellamy takes a bow. And the huge screens behind the band burst into star light as the band, you guessed it, burst into "Starlight". In fact, from now on, unless we say otherwise, just presume that the audience tonight are being spoon-fed their stadium rock in an easy to digest, easy to understand puree. Of course, this is exactly as the crowd want it, clapping along in rhythmical "Radio Ga Ga" approval.

Almost immediately it becomes clear that not much of tonight's performance is left to chance and it's hard to tell the difference between what the band is playing and what is being provided by a keyboard player, standing in the shadows, and banks of sequencers and samplers off stage. In fact by far and away the most enjoyable bits of tonight are when it's Bellamy on his own teasing torrents of white noise from his axe. This is because as soon as drummer Dominic Howard triggers the machinery, they're all locked tightly into attack formation.

Song of the night (and a highlight of their career so far) is a muscular "Supermassive Black Hole", which momentarily abandons their blueprint of playing Wagnerian arpeggios on a distorted guitar or piano and instead plumping for the altogether more sublime implosion of Curtis Mayfield, Prince and Black Sabbath in unholy unison. Ultimately though, Muse's live show is as big and daft as the frontman's beliefs that we're all descended from alien astronauts and by the time they play "Plug In Baby", Devon's smashing bumpkins have an already partisan crowd baying for more despite not really having tried at all.

Crítica del concierto de Singapur...

Muse leaves fans wanting more
By Zul Othman, TODAY | Posted: 18 January 2007 0750 hrs

The most exhilarating rock concert in recent memory was also the most trying. While British rock trio Muse lived up to the hype of being one of the world's top live bands when they played at Fort Canning Park on Tuesday, the performance was ultimately let down by an inferior sound system.

Worst of all, fans were heard murmuring at the end of the night's proceedings that the show — which clocked in at less than 90 minutes — was too short.

It was not an unreasonable grumble. Fans had begun streaming into the Fort Canning grounds as early as 6pm. Two hours later, nearly 7,000 of them had crammed into the arena and the air was bleeding with anticipation.

The band — made up of guitarist/vocalist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard — trotted on stage only at 8.45pm. Better late than never, one fan was heard whispering — and the wait was worth it.

Muse was in such fine form that one could overlook the technical glitches. As the band blasted through the first riffs to set opener 'Knights of Cydonia' (from last year's 'Black Holes And Revelations'), it was clear why the British music press continually rave about the ferocity of this Devon-based outfit concert wise.

Their trump card is undoubtedly front man Bellamy: A natural showman who is equal parts Jeff Buckley and heavy-metal guitar god, he is a natural both at dishing out sensitive falsettos and running around the stage like a mad man.

Amazingly for a band feted for their concert appearances, there was very little crowd interaction — most of the displays of appreciation, strangely, came from drummer Howard.

At times, this proved exasperating. Right after an emotive interpretation of Plug In Baby, the band inexplicably disappeared from the stage, only to return 10 minutes later to perform the encore.

Nevertheless, the night's shortcomings were forgivable and Muse may just have staged the best rock show in Singapore in ages.

Some fans may grumble that their biggest hits were in short supply that night, but the band did crank out technically perfect renditions of 'Starlight', 'Time Is Running Out' and 'Stockholm Syndrome'.

It will be interesting to see how other bands are going to top this gig.
