Muse shine again as prog-rock stars
Review: English trio Muse takes live set to new heights at its biggest O.C. gig to date.
By NIYAZ PIRANI

It's 12:20 a.m. early Saturday, and it's starting to rain. Actually, it just started to pourrain. The skies were cloudy, but rain-free an hour ago when Muse was winding down its lengthy set at Irvine's Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, but I'm pretty sure if it was pouring then like it is now, not many would have cared.

No, they still would've been dancing until the very end, just as feverishly as they all began when the members of Muse stormed the stage and ambushed the crowd with fan-favorite "Knights of Cydonia."

That kind of ravenous devotion, while hard to earn, makes sense in the case of the English trio. The band pulls much from revered acts such as Tool and Radiohead (two bands who claim religious devotees as well), but puts its own unique spin on heavy, dynamic prog-rock.

It only makes sense then for Muse to eventually catch on with hard rock fans searching for a band that puts out records more frequently than the aforementioned outfits.

That consistency has worked too. A quick history lesson reveals that the band's tightly played live show has pulled more and more people into its mystical black hole of sound on nearly every record cycle – from sold-out shows at the Wiltern in 2004 to a capacity stand at the Forum earlier this year.

It was only time before the band brought its show to Orange County, which it did, and things hit a high point on Friday night.

Trippy visuals, veils of smoke and enough lights to induce an epileptic seizure set the mood for Muse's aural attack that never seemed to let up.

Guitarist-pianist frontman Matthew Bellamy, donning a red suit, led the attack on the slow-but-groovy stuff ("Starlight," "Supermassive Black Hole," "Invincible"). Between the jarring feedback and piercing guitar wash bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard added dynamic bombast to the heavier stuff ("Plug In Baby," "Time Is Running Out").

While a majority of the band's material was pulled from its fourth effort, the critically-acclaimed "Black Holes and Revelations," Muse wasn't shy about satisfying older fans with a few tunes from previous works "Absolution," "Origin of Symmetry" and "Showbiz" too.

Fan involvement was evident as the first notes of nearly every song were met with enthusiastic adulation ensuring that the band's reputation on American soil still has nowhere to go but up.

On home turf, Muse has risen to the upper echelon of performers and can pull enough fans to fill a stadium. After the Forum show and now Verizon, Muse may have amassed enough word-of-mouth that a larger venue than the already-hefty places they've played so far may be necessary in the future.

Muse thrill fans at Southern California gig
The British trio gather steam in America
24.Sep.07 8:33pm

Muse pulled out all the stops and delivered their trademark spectacular show at Irvine's Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on Friday (September 21).

The British trio played to a 16,000-strong audience of adoring fans, who sang along to nearly every word during their 90-minute set.

Frontman Matthew Bellamy, dressed in a red suit with a Stevie Nicks shirt underneath, switched between guitar and piano throughout the night, and put his band through the paces on several songs from their most recent album 'Black Holes And Revelations'.

They also pulled out some old favourites, including 'Absolution', 'Showbiz' and 'Origin Of Symmetry'.

During 'Soldier's Poem', Bellamy asked the audience to raise their mobile phones to create a sea of light in the huge amphitheatre. He also climbed up an amplifier and nearly fell off.

Toward the end of the night, white balloons filled the venue, and when audience members popped them, confetti flew everywhere.

Muse concluded the show with a dramatic three-song encore, during which Bellamy dropped to the floor and bowed his guitar using the edge of an amplifier.

Muse inspires at Red Rocks
Band performs hits from new album, enchants fans
Katie Mastrolanni

Muse fans enjoyed a clear, warm fall night last week Tuesday at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the band's highly anticipated return to the Denver.

Meanwhile, opening bands Immigrant and Juliette and the Licks showed heart and talent, but were unable to excite the crowd that anxiously awaited headliners Muse.

And Muse delivered with extravagant lighting and an amazing stage presence, Muse's performance impressed fans, as if the music alone wasn't enough.

Muse's front man Matt Bellamy delivered angelic falsettos, piano arrangements and amazing guitar solos. The wide range of talent he brings to the band demonstrates why he is the face of Muse.

However, the supporting cast is also excellent. Bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard are an integral part of the band. Muse's show showcases the talents of each band member, although Bellamy tends to occupy the spotlight.

Winning praise from Justin Timberlake and The Killers, it's obvious to see why these big names in music are just as avid Muse fans as those in attendance at Red Rocks.

Muse played a range of music from all four of the band's albums, pleasing new and old fans alike.

Opening with the radio hit "Knights of Cydonia," from the band's most recent album, Black Holes and Revelations, Muse weaved in songs ranging from the newest, "Supermassive Black Hole" and "Starlight," to tracks on previous albums like "Butterflies and Hurricanes," "Sunburn," and "Time is Running Out." Muse finally ended the show with "Plug in Baby."

Of course, this was only the first ending, as the crowd pleaded for an encore. For the encore, Muse chose "Take a Bow" and "Stockholm Syndrome" in an incredible show-stopping finale.

Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, Irvine, CA - 09.21.07
by Sung Kim

In recent years accolades along the lines of “Best Live Band in the World” have been thrown at Muse both by the press and music fans.  Seeing them perform it is easy to see why they receive such high praise.  This is also why it’s probably a bad idea to write a review soon after seeing one of their shows.  Muse’s performances are so powerful that it stays with you for days and thoughts like “world’s greatest guitarist since Jimi Hendrix” and other involuntary hyperbole take a while to dissipate.  And once they do, chances are you’ll want to dive right back in again.  As with each successive album the band seems to pick up more new fans enthralled with their performances.  Tonight a capacity crowd of 16,000 filled Orange County’s largest venue to take the collective plunge.

Nothing matches the sheer energy of a Muse show.  The band walked on stage to the intro of “Knights of Cydonia” and an instant connection with the crowd was formed.  This opening song is perhaps not the best off their latest album Black Holes & Revelations but characteristic of the musical direction the band is heading currently.  The lyrics contain themes common among past albums such as the apocalypse and mutual struggle against oppression and the music is the band’s usual non-compromising hard rock soundtrack.  But as with other songs on the album the music has an over the top pomposity that walks a fine line on sincerity, and if you buy into it you are rewarded with total nirvana.  Of course the band’s performance led by singer Matthew Bellamy can push all of these distractions aside.  As already mentioned Matt’s guitar playing is nothing short of breathtaking and with a virtuosity that is closely matched in Dominic Howard’s drumming and Chris Wolstenholme’s bass skills.

Muse experiment with new music in a dramatic way on Black Holes & Revelations blending unexpected genres for the trio.  “Starlight” is an unabashed straight out love song with simple piano lines and a dance pop clap that gets the participation of the entire crowd going, present company included.  Their biggest single to date “Supermassive Black Hole” is also a love song but with an even dancier beat.  Can Muse get even hardcore rockers raised on a early diet of Metallica to dance?  Ask anyone crushed in the pit.  Perhaps more surprising is the song “City of Delusion” with acoustic guitar, a flamenco feel, and prominent horn accompaniment.  As if to balance out this new and kinder, gentler, Muse, the band threw in the song “Invincible” which captures a guitar solo for the ages.  The slow build up in the song to the solo is like being sucked into a tidal wave.  And how can I best describe the actual guitar solo?  Take the most impossibly fast solo you can think of and now imagine it being played as expressively and cleanly as possible.  All this new found experimentation makes me love and admire Muse even more.  The fact that they are not afraid to incorporate new sounds and genres into their music, do it successfully, and still come out with their identity intact and even bolstered, seems a monumental feat.  One of the highlights of the show was Muse’s rendition of “Feeling Good”, a song made famous by Nina Simone, taken from their second album Origin of Symmetry.  This ends up being one of the too few songs that Matt plays on the piano tonight.  All in all, I am thankful for the new songs but I definitely appreciate the simplicity of their earlier material.

The extroverted energy of the new album however has not changed the personality of the band on stage.  Matt seems to dance and jump around the stage more frequently and cover more ground.  But besides the brief thank you’s throughout the set and the goodbye at the end, there is hardly a word spoken.  The band clearly wants their music to do the talking.  The only spoken part came in a surprising inclusion of a speech by John F. Kennedy during the break.  The speech, a poetic musing on the topic of government disclosure, was projected on the led screen towering above the stage and played over the speakers.  After only a few minutes Muse returned to stage and closed the night with a short encore.  As a side note I was concerned throughout the night with the rain that was forecast earlier in the week.  The first fall rain that would have been a welcome relief to people directly affected by drought, save perhaps those in tonight’s attendance.  Thankfully the night was dry and in fact rain started dropping as people headed out of the venue.  A sign maybe that even God is susceptible to hyperbole and has cast his vote for “Best Live Band in the World”.
